Papaya is a fantastic beauty secret you may not have known about before.
It’s loaded with Vitamins A, C and E and has antioxidant properties that help rejuvenate the skin.
Most fruits are high in antioxidants, which help fight free radicals in our body. You can read more about free radicals in the blog post I did here.
But I would bet most of us are not really eating or using a lot of papaya in our daily meals or routines.
But maybe we should start.
Papayas naturally contain papain, which is an enzyme that can help us break down food. So not only is it a great fruit to take internally, when applied topically, it can be a great exfoliator. Who knew enzymes in food could also be beneficial to our skin? It’s also always a bonus when we can find beauty regimes that are safe and natural.
So how can papaya benefit our skin?
It can improve hydration, discoloration, signs of aging, and help rejuvenate our skin through the exfoliation process. Less ripe papayas have more of the enzyme papain so if you have sensitive skin, opt for a ripe papaya as this will contain less of the enzyme.
If you are struggling with dull looking skin, aging skin, oxidative stress, or just simply looking for budget friendly solutions that you can make at home, this would be a great place to start.
Here’s a quick and easy face mask I found in the book Clean Skin from Within:
1 T ripe papaya flesh
1 T organic plain greek yogurt ( I like to use greek bc its thicker and the whey has been removed)
1 t oatmeal
Blend all of this in a food processor or blender, apply to a clean dry face and leave on for 10 min. Rinse off with warm water and a soft washcloth. Splash your face again with cool water.
When choosing moisturizers stay away from these common ingredients that can be damaging or toxic:
- Mineral oil
- Synthetic Silicones
- Retinol (do not apply retinol based creams to your skin and then go out in the sun.)
Bonus Smoothie tip:
Throw some papaya and banana in a fruit smoothie with some coconut milk, maca powder and vanilla protein powder. Quick and easy way to ingest more anti aging foods.
